3 reasons why your ECM (car brain box) always go bad

Engine Control Module ( ECM) of a car

Engine Control Module ( ECM) inside  a car

I have contact with people regularly who complain of their ECM (Engine Control Module ) fondly called brain box getting bad.

Three major reasons are.

1. Removing the battery head while the key is plugged to the ignition switch

2. Allowing water get in contact with the ECM (brain box)

3. This may look unimportant but it counts, do not allow any naked wiring in your car , ensure to tape any when you  find one. All the body of your car is earthy allowing any expose will result to short circuiting which may damage the ECM

  1. Could the ecm cause no rear brake lights and turn signals? All other lights work including the third brake light. The stop switch was replaced and dimmer/turn signal switch. 2008 Biuck Lucerne CXL

  2. yes but in few occasions, but before you change the ECM, it will be wise to locate the brake light switch and check for possible damage and replace it. thanks

  7. I have a toyota highlander 2006 that suddenly stopped while I was on motion. Every effort at starting it failed even with an electrician and mechanic. They had to tow the car to the workshop. It was found that the brain box was burnt. When the brain box was replaced, the car started but within minutes, the brain box also got burnt. This has happened thrice with the loss of three brain boxes besides the initial one in the car. The whole wire in the bonnet has been traced, removed and the it's still mot solving the problem. The wire harness has been removed and the electrician is confused of what to do.
Prior to these events, the brake light or parking light had remained on and the battery probably ran down. The car refused to start and a driver offered to jump-start the car with his own battery. While I went to call an electrician within the neighbourhood, on coming back all the lights on the dash board (which was on before I left)failed to light. The car didn't start but the driver denied misplacing the terminals.
The electrician did lots of fuse work and restored the lights and I only drove the care thereafter with serious difficulty (not firing) before it finally packed.
Please what could be responsible for the repeated burning of the brain boxes? What can I do?
    Thanks

  8. Ask ur car electritian to check the amount of voltage entering the ecu, the voltage is suposed to be in d range of (9-12 volt), if d volt is less or high it can cause a problem, if he findsout of voltage problem he should check a sensor on the kick starter or the alternator for better diagnose
